Brief History of the Black Panther Party

The Black Panther Party (BPP), founded in 1966 by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale in Oakland, California, was a revolutionary socialist organization aimed at challenging police brutality and systemic racism while empowering Black communities. The Party’s focus was on self-defense, community control, and the upliftment of Black people through education, healthcare, and social programs.

Inspired by the ideals of Black nationalism and Pan-Africanism, the Panthers developed several key programs, most notably the Free Breakfast for Children Program, community clinics, and education initiatives. These efforts were designed to address the immediate needs of Black communities and to arm them with knowledge—whether through teaching African American history, revolutionary thought, or basic literacy.

The BPP also emphasized the importance of political education. Party members hosted study groups, distributed educational materials, and organized Liberation Schools—a direct response to the neglect and misrepresentation of Black history in mainstream education. The Panthers taught Black children and adults about their history, culture, and the importance of social change, all with an eye toward building a future based on justice and equality.

The legacy of the Black Panther Party, particularly its community-based educational programs, deeply inspired the creation of BPMX Liberation School. Founded in 2022, BPMX follows in the Panthers' footsteps by focusing on Black history, revolutionary ideas, and empowerment through education. In the tradition of the Panthers' mission, BPMX seeks to inspire the Black community to "Wake up, Clean up, and Stand up!" in the ongoing struggle for liberation and self-determination.

Gregory 14X and the Nation of Islam

Clarence 13X, also known asClarence 13X, also known as Father Allah,, was an influential member of the Nation of Islam, which was founded by Master Fard Muhammad and later led by Elijah Muhammad. The Nation of Islam, particularly under Elijah Muhammad’s leadership, emphasized the importance of self-education, self-reliance, and economic independence for Black people. One of the core elements of this vision was the establishment of schools and community programs to teach Black children and adults their true history, culture, and the teachings of Islam, from a Black nationalist perspective.

Imam Clarence 13X played a significant role in the educational and spiritual work of the Nation of Islam. His leadership and commitment to the NOI's mission helped to inspire the creation of educational institutions that would teach Black youth about their history, culture, and faith. Clarence 13X’s school initiatives, including those associated with the Allah School in Mecca, reflected the broader goal of providing an alternative to mainstream education, which was often neglectful or hostile to the realities of Black people in America.

The Allah School in Mecca

The Allah School in Mecca is one of the schools linked to the Nation of Islam, established to offer education based on the teachings of Master Fard Muhammad and Elijah Muhammad. These schools were created to provide Black children with a rigorous education grounded in Islam, Black history, and self-empowerment.

Origins of the Allah School in Mecca

  1. Foundation of the NGE:
    • Founded in 1964 by Clarence 13X, also known as Father Allah, after he left the Nation of Islam (NOI).
    • He diverged from the NOI's strict religious structure to create a philosophy focused on the empowerment of young Black people, teaching them that they were "Gods" with the power to control their own destiny.
  2. Establishment of the School:
    • The Allah School in Mecca was established in 1966 as a central hub for the Five Percenters in Harlem.
    • It was named "Mecca," a symbolic language to describe places significant to their community, with Harlem being a cultural and spiritual center for Black empowerment.
